Dr Esselstyn’s Visit Delayed |
In 2009, VSS hosted a successful visit by Professor T Colin Campbell, a strong advocate of plant-based diets. Prof Campbell recommended that this year we invite Dr Caldwell B. Esselstyn, author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, and we were happy to do so. Our initial plans were to have Dr. Essy visit in Oct, but due to a scheduling conflict, this may only be possible next year. We hope to find a replacement for this Oct. |

Revamping Our Food Outlet List |
One of the most popular locations on the VSS web is our Food Outlets page http://www.vss.sg/food which lists food outlets according to the nearest MRT and LRT stations. However, with some many new MRT stations opening this year, and even more in coming years, it’s becoming increasingly tricky to decide which MRT station an outlet is nearest. Thus, we’re looking around for a new organising principle for the Food Outlet page. One person suggested real estate districts, and another recommended postal codes. Thoughts? Does Dark Chocolate Contain More Iron Than Beef? |
There are many veg sources of iron, such as chick peas and various beans, broccoli, spinach, brown rice, dried figs and apricots, and brown sugar and molasses. Dark chocolate probably shouldn’t be an everyday food, but now and then, it might be a good choice: http://www.care2.com/greenliving/iron-dark-chocolate -contains-more-than-beef.html Some brands of dark chocolate come without dairy. |

A reader sent in the following article. Our question: Is there much difference between zoos with restaurants where patrons can eat the same species on exhibit at the zoos and zoos with restaurants that serve the meat of cows, chickens, fishes and other fellow animals we humans customarily dine on? http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/may/21/ |

Excerpt #1 from The Pig Who Sang to the Moon |
Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson has used his professional knowledge of psychology to write several excellent books that provide insight into the thinking and emotions of non-human animals. The Pig Who Sang to the Moon: The Emotional World of Farm Animals (2003) is one of those books. Over the next issues, we’ll be running excerpts from that book. Here is the first. pp. 26 and 27 On Thursday, March 9, 2000, the London Daily Telegraph reported the remarkable rescue of Dee Jones by her pet pig, Pru. … When walking with her sheepdog in Whitland, West Wales, Jones fell waist-deep into a bog. She panicked at first, but when Pru came over she put the dog leash around the pig and told her: “Go home, go home!” Pru obeyed, pulling Jones out of the mud and saving her life. … What is the explanation? Since a human in distress makes a sound very similar to a pig in distress, Jones’s pig clearly understood that the situation was dangerous and was intelligent enough to obey the order to return home. Here the pig’s curiosity, her ability to use insight, and her natural affection for people to whom she feels close, came together to save the life of someone dear to her. |
