VSS Open for Donations at SG Gives |
SG Gives, or Singapore Gives - https://www.sggives.org - is an online donation portal for donors who seek to give to Singapore-registered charities. It is an initiative of the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre. Unlike fundraising through flag days, gala dinners or charity auctions, SG Gives allows donations to be made day and night, all week, all year round. VSS is now listed on SG Gives. Here’s what it says about us: Moving towards a diet rich in plant foods will benefit human health, the environment and the non-human animals with whom we share the planet. Sadly, meat consumption continues to increase. Thus, one of humanity's most urgent tasks is convincing people that eating less meat is both essential and doable. Of course, you can also donate via the VSS web: http://www.vegetarian-society.org/support_vss |

Another Way to Donate to Save Lives |
The savvy folks at SG Gives have another idea for encouraging donations to VSS and other charities. As is shown in the example below from the SG Gives website, when someone passes away, their family can suggest that in lieu of flowers or other tokens, well-wishers donate to VSS via the SG Gives website. "A simple service will be held today, Rather than receive floral tributes, Richard and Wendy's eish is to support Assisi Hospice. |

VSS in The Online Citizen |
The Online Citizen is a local new media outlet. On 17 Jun, they ran a piece by a VSS Exco member, explaining the benefits of moving towards a plant based diet http://theonlinecitizen.com/2010/06/ One feature of new media is that it is often easy to post comments, whereas, as you can see in the following piece, publishing comments in old media, such as The Straits Times, can be difficult. So, please do visit the above link and comment. Many people have already taken part in a lively debate. |

Letter to ST Forum Page |
Seems that the following letter was not published by ST. We haven’t had any letters published in the traditional media this year, but we aren’t giving up. I refer to 'Animals as food', The Sunday Times of 13 June (p. C3). The author, Adele Ong, questions whether we should make animals give their lives so that humans can eat fancy dishes, such as shark's fin and veal. I would further question whether we need to make any animals give their lives to become food for humans. A large body of research suggests that humans can obtain all the nutrition we need without eating non-human animals. For example, in 2009, the American Dietetic Association, the world’s largest organisation of health and nutrition professionals, issued an evidence based position paper stating that vegetarian diets are nutritionally adequate and can even have health benefits: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2009-07/ Appearing on the same page of The Sunday Times as Ms Ong's article are photos of cute animals whom are up for adoption. Why are we so kind to cats, dogs and other species whom we take as pets, while at the same time we condemn other species, such as chickens and pigs, to short, miserable lives? |

Anything Is Possible: Veg in Mongolia |
A reader sent in the following good news. An unlikely vegetarian movement is taking root in Mongolia, where livestock outnumber people 14 to 1, and annual meat consumption tops 200 pounds per person. The first vegetarian restaurant in Mongolia, Ananda's Cafe, opened in 2006. Today more than 20 vegetarian and vegan restaurants dot the capital, Ulaanbaatar, and a handful of others are scattered throughout the country. Ananda's has launched a catering service, and another popular restaurant, Luna Blanca, now sells frozen faux-mutton dumplings in local supermarkets. The vegetarian restaurateurs are mostly Mongolians... |

Brown Rice May Lower Diabetes Risk |
According to a large-scale study by researchers at Harvard and elsewhere, people who eat brown rice or other whole grains seem to have a lower risk of developing diabetes than those who eat white rice. Read more at http://www.reuters.com/article/ idUSTRE65D5DY20100614 And, in SG, what’s the best type of eatery for brown rice? A veg eatery. More and more veg eateries, including hawkers, offer brown rice. If the one you visit doesn’t have brown rice, please try some gentle persuasion. Maybe they could start by mixing brown and white. In contrast, brown rice seems to be as common as a needle in a rice stack at non-veg eateries. |
